The castle d'Oléron , a town famous for its oysters, is home to the citadel, a huge fortress on the seafront.
The Chassiron lighthouse , perched on a rocky cliff, is located at the northern end of the island.
Finally, Fort Boyard is a must-see monument. Made famous by a television program, the Fort is a fortification situated on a shoal formed by a sandbank originally, called the “Boyard's loin”. Fort Boyard is an integral part of the Rochefort maritime arsenal which stretches all along the Charente estuary.
